FORS Delivery and Why Warehousing and Storage Improve the Delivery Process

Platinum Transport brings back a HIAB onto its fleet.

It’s been a few years since we’ve had a Hiab on our fleet since transitioning over to Moffetts, but due to client demand, we’ve gone all out and bought a Scania 8×2 with a Palfinger PK 620002-EH crane and beavertail body.

Capable of lifting 12600klg @ 4.2 and 3000kg @ 16.1m , this lorry mounted crane is perfect for a variety of different freight inlcuding: Containers, Stillages, Crates, Machinery , Plant & much more.

Hiab typically refers to the transportation of goods using a crane-equipped truck. These vehicles are used to load, transport, and unload heavy or bulky items, especially when manual lifting would be difficult or impossible. The term “HIAB” comes from the brand name of the original hydraulic crane system, but it has become a general term used to refer to any truck with a similar crane for lifting and handling heavy loads.

Here are some key things to know about Hiab deliveries

  1. Versatility: Hiab trucks are perfect for a range of deliveries. They can handle large building materials (like bricks, steel beams, and concrete), machinery, and furniture. The crane can lift items that are too heavy for standard delivery vehicles.

  2. Urban Challenges: Delivering in a busy city like London presents specific challenges. Traffic congestion, narrow streets, and restricted parking areas can make Hiab deliveries tricky. However, Hiab trucks are often used in urban settings because of their ability to load and unload in tight spaces.

  3. Construction and Building Industry: In London, many Hiab deliveries are for the construction industry. The cranes are used to offload materials directly onto construction sites, which may be in hard-to-reach areas. This is especially helpful in high-density areas where traditional methods of delivery might not be feasible.

  4. Residential and Commercial Deliveries: Hiab vehicles are also used for large or delicate items in residential and commercial deliveries, such as bulky furniture, air conditioning units, or even large artworks. The precision of the crane makes these kinds of deliveries more efficient and safer.

5.Safety: Hiab deliveries require skilled operators to handle the cranes safely, particularly in busy areas like London. The delivery company usually ensures that the operators are trained to manage heavy loads and navigate busy urban roads. Safety protocols, including site risk assessments, are essential.

6. Types of Hiab Cranes: There are different types of Hiab cranes with varying lifting capacities. For example, some can lift up to 20 tons, while others are designed for lighter loads but may have more flexible reach.

7. Permit and Regulation: Regulations might require permits for vehicles that use cranes in public areas, especially for roadworks or when the delivery obstructs traffic. Operators must comply with the city’s rules and restrictions.
